Why CASH is the best donation you could bless us with.
We are super grateful for all the offers to bring down art supplies, but here I’m going to tell you why CASH is the best donation you could give us.
We were able to start the Casa de la Creatividad on a mix of mostly donated materials, and some bought materials. These generous gifts, as well as a space that we bartered for, allowed us to set up the art studio with “stations” for painting, clay, crafts, recyclables, and stamping/printing. Because of so many generous souls sending down art materials, we had a lot of extras, and they went into storage as backup materials and items for special stations that would be introduced later.
But it’s a learning experience! In our hot and humid tropical climate we have issues with storing materials. (Not to mention our studio is small and space is limited) Paper and fabric goes bad easily with mold and bugs. Storing in cardboard boxes lets air in but attracts roaches and the boxes start to “wilt” pretty quickly. Storing in plastic holds in moisture and a nasty mildew will quickly grow. We are learning to do and promote art-making that will hold up to our humid and salty conditions. I sadly remember the time I had to throw out most of the kids’ modeling clay sculptures due to a layer of white mold growing on them when we re-opened the studio after being closed for a few weeks.
With cash donations we can pay our valuable Studio Coordinator and our Studio Assistant.
With cash donations we can keep the lights on and the water flowing.
With cash donations we can buy materials when they run out without having to store them. Fortunately, the materials we use most can be found on the island. (Cardstock for painting, glue, acrylic paint, tempera paint, thin plywood for painting on, and popsicle sticks).
With cash donations we buy necessities for the studio that donors don’t think of when gathering supplies—things like toilet paper, soap, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and fresh water for drinking.
And one day, with enough cash donations, we can open longer hours, and serve more kids. Right now we see about 90 kid visits in a 16 hour week.
One day, with enough donations, we buy or build our own building to create stability in the services we provide to our families, many have been with us since we opened.
If you want to help Casa de la Creatividad, consider a cash donation, it’s easy! The amount doesn’t matter, everything counts. A small automatic monthly donation of $30-$60- $100 will have a great impact for the children.
