Volunteering
Art Power’s Casa de la Creatividad in Cozumel, Mexico is an organization that works with kids. We change the lives of kids and young people by building skills, promoting good habits, nurturing expression and inspiring self confidence in kids facing difficult circumstances and planting the seeds of positive change that improves their lives and communities. We are always working for the best interest of the children who come to our studio.
There is a lot of activity in the studio. We are a choice based studio so there are no assignments, or lessons (with the exception of special but informal workshops). The kids work independently on a project of their choice, and the kids, no matter how old they are, are responsible for getting their own materials out, maintaining their workspace, and cleaning up—to the best of their abilities. Help and assistance is always needed with getting monitored materials, technique for improving quality and construction and execution of their design, and of course, lots of reminders about cleaning up. Studio Volunteer—18 hour minimum commitment over 8 weeks Volunteers agree to 16 hours of service and attend the Volunteer Orientation (1.5 hours) Volunteers choose a 2 hour weekly shift Volunteers must have at least 50% fluency in Spanish so that the children can have a quality experience in the studio. We love and appreciate our volunteers and want them to have the best experience at Casa de la Creatividad as possible. But most importantly we want the kids to feel comfortable and at ease with the volunteers who come to the studio. We have structured our Volunteer Policy to maximize the potential for volunteers to have meaningful interactions with the kids. |
Special Skills Volunteers - 12 hour minimum commitment and a 1-3 week duration
Spanish is not necessary but it is very helpful. Skilled volunteers (art teachers, artists, fluent Spanish speakers...) prepare and provide all materials for special workshops of their design that is approved by the staff and Executive Director. Volunteers run special workshops for the kids. Volunteers are encouraged to create a fundraiser among their friends to raise money for Casa de la Creatividad (assuming they are traveling to Cozumel to volunteer) Think of it as “immersion volunteering”. |
