Volunteering

Art Power’s Casa de la Creatividad in Cozumel, Mexico is an organization that works with kids. We change the lives of kids and young people by building skills, promoting good habits, nurturing expression and inspiring self confidence in kids facing difficult circumstances and planting the seeds of positive change that improves their lives and communities. We are always working for the best interest of the children who come to our studio.

There is a lot of activity in the studio. We are a choice based studio so there are no assignments, or lessons (with the exception of special but informal workshops). The kids work independently on a project of their choice, and the kids, no matter how old they are, are responsible for getting their own materials out, maintaining their workspace, and cleaning up—to the best of their abilities. Help and assistance is always needed with getting monitored materials, technique for improving quality and construction and execution of their design, and of course, lots of reminders about cleaning up.

We love and appreciate our volunteers and want them to have the best experience at Casa de la Creatividad as possible. But most importantly we want the kids to feel comfortable and at ease with the volunteers who come to the studio. We have structured our Volunteer Policy to maximize the potential for volunteers to have meaningful interactions with the kids.

Studio Volunteer—14 hour minimum commitment over 6 weeks
Volunteers agree to 12 hours of service and attend the Volunteer Orientation (1.5 hours)
Volunteers choose a 2 hour weekly shift

Spanish is not necessary, but basic Spanish will enhance your experience.

Special Skills Volunteers - 12 hour minimum commitment and a 1-3 week duration
Spanish is not necessary but it is very helpful.
Skilled volunteers
(art teachers, artists, fluent Spanish speakers...) prepare and provide all materials for special workshops that they design.
Volunteers run special workshops for the kids or adults.
Volunteers create a fundraiser among their friends to raise money for Casa de la Creatividad (assuming they are traveling to Cozumel to volunteer)
Think of it as “immersion volunteering”.
*Housing may be available for a small fee.

Support Volunteers
We also have opportunities for volunteering behind the scenes.
Volunteers help organize and sort donated materials, prepare materials for the studio, and clean in the studio.
The times are arranged around the studio open hours and on studio cleaning day.
There are no restrictions on how many or few times you sign up for this.
Interactions with the kids is minimal to none.
